Gouldmaps is a specialized antiquarian bookshop in the center of Steenwijk. We offer original antique maps and natural history prints of high quality.
For almost 10 years, Gouldmaps by Mark van der Staay has been active in buying and selling antique maps, natural history prints and books. We prefer the earliest prints and copies with great cultural-historical value.
Every antique print tells us a story and connects us with our cultural heritage. Cartographic science experienced its glory days in the 16th and 17th centuries. It started in the late 15th century with reissues of classical world views by Ptolemy and Macrobius. But America was ‘discovered’ and a new generation of geographers such as Waldseemüller published the latest insights in the so-called Tabula Nova’s at the beginning of the 16th century. The success of Sebasian Münster’s ‘Cosmographia’ from 1544, Mercator’s projection in 1569, the publication of the first folio atlas by Abraham Ortelius in 1570 and the first city atlas by Braun and Hogenberg in 1572 finally brought the world into the living room of the citizen.
Inspired by the natural sciences, the images of flora and fauna developed from simple drawings to the most decorative masterpieces. The collection includes exceptionally beautiful natural history prints by Besler, Maria Merian, Nozeman, Gould and Audubon, among others.

Gouldmaps is een gespecialiseerd antiquariaat in het centrum van Steenwijk. Wij bieden originele antieke kaarten en natuurhistorische prenten van hoge kwaliteit.
Bijna 10 jaar is Gouldmaps van Mark van der Staay actief met het kopen en verkopen van antieke kaarten, natuurhistorische prenten en boeken. Onze voorkeur gaat uit naar de vroegste prenten en exemplaren met grote cultuurhistorische waarde.
Iedere antieke prent vertelt ons een verhaal en verbindt ons met ons cultureel erfgoed. De cartografische wetenschap beleeft in de 16e en 17e eeuw haar gloriedagen. Het begint in de late 15e eeuw met heruitgaven van klassieke wereldbeelden door Ptolemeus en Macrobius. Maar America wordt ‘ontdekt’ en een nieuwe generatie geografen zoals Waldseemüller publiceren begin 16e eeuw de laatste inzichten in de zogenaamde Tabula Nova’s. Door het succes van Sebasian Münster’s ‘Cosmographia’ uit 1544, Mercator’s projectie in 1569, de publicatie van de eerste folio atlas door Abraham Ortelius in 1570 en de eerste stedenatlas door Braun en Hogenberg in 1572 komt de wereld definitief de huiskamer van de burger binnen.
Geïnspireerd door de natuurwetenschappen ontwikkelen de afbeeldingen van flora en fauna zich van eenvoudige tekeningen tot de meest decoratieve meesterwerken. De collectie omvat bijzonder fraaie natuurhistorische prenten van onder andere Besler, Maria Merian, Nozeman, Gould en Audubon.
