Backgrounds

Michael Bernard Valentini (1657-1729) was professor of medicine and natural sciences in Giessen from 1687 onwards and personal physician to the Margrave of Hessen. From 1699 onwards he published various systematic works. In 1714 Valentini’s Museorum Museum was published, the first study of collections in Europe. In 1719 his Viridarium Reformatum was published. With its 606 copper engravings, this work is one of the most extraordinary and comprehensive botanical books of its time. The book contains 178 engravings from the Florilegium Novum (1612) by Johann Theodor de Bry (1561-1623) and the Florilegium Renovatum et auctum (1641) by his son-in-law Matthaus Merian (1593-1650). 223 engravings by Mathias Merian from Von Anhalt’s Der Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft Nahmen from 1646 have been used. alentini supplemented the book with approximately 150 pages of engravings after Pietro Andrea Mattioli, Caspar Bauhin and others. The book also includes a reproduction of Opus Mago-Cabalisticum. This work explains and presents the world system of the alchemist, theosophist, and administrator Georg Welling (1655-1727).

In the late 16th century, Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues and Joris Hoefnagel created magnificent collages with individual flowers and insects. Based on this work, Phillip Galle published the first flower book with engravings by Adriaan Collaert in Antwerp, Florilegium ab Hadriano Collaert, was published in Antwerp by Phillip Galle. Collaert, and also Joris Hoefnagel, seem to have inspired flower books that appeared shortly thereafter in various Western European countries: Le Jardin du roi (Paris) by Pierre Vallet (1608/1623), Hortus Floridus (Arnhem) by Crispin van de Passe (1607/14/17), Hortus Eystettensis (Nuremberg) by Basilius Besler (1613/40/1713), and Florilegium Novum/Renovatum (Frankfurt) by Johann Theodor and Mathias Merian.
