Backgrounds
This hand-colored print is from the second volume (of three) of the the first edition of the first book devoted entirely to parrots in captivity. Intended as a guide for keeping parrots as pets, the work features handsome hand-colored plates of macaws, cockatoos, lories, parrots, parakeets, and lovebirds.
The plates were created by Benjamin Fawcett (1808–1893) after drawings by Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917). Fawcett developed a technique of color-printing using wood engravings known as chromoxylography. The secret of his success was that he was able to master the details of the work process of layer on layer printing: mixing colors and mastering the woodblock as well as drawing, engraving, printing and colouring. Fawcett instilled his entire staff with a handicraft fanaticism that did not want to let the slightest mistake go through.
Deze met de hand ingekleurde afdruk komt uit het tweede deel (van drie) van de eerste editie van het eerste boek dat volledig is gewijd aan papegaaien in gevangenschap. Bedoeld als een gids voor het houden van papegaaien als huisdier, bevat het werk mooie handgekleurde platen van ara’s, kaketoes, lori’s, papegaaien, parkieten en tortelduifjes.
De platen zijn gemaakt door Benjamin Fawcett (1808-1893) naar tekeningen van Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917). Fawcett ontwikkelde een techniek van kleurendruk met behulp van houtgravures die bekend staat als chromoxylografie. Het geheim van zijn succes was dat hij de details van het werkproces van laag over laag printen onder de knie kon krijgen: kleuren mengen en het houtblok beheersen, maar ook tekenen, graveren, drukken en kleuren. Fawcett bracht zijn hele staf een handwerkfanatisme bij dat niet de minste fout tolereerde.
