Description

Dit aanzicht, met zijn mooie originele handkleuring, is één van de mooiste ooit gemaakt van de hoofdstad van Friesland. Het toont de stad van een afstand, de torens en windmolens zorgvuldig afgebakend. Op de voorgrond zijn de velden rondom de stad te zien en zijn autochtone mannen en vrouwen afgebeeld bij hun dagelijkse bezigheden.

Petrus (Pieter) Schenk I (1660-1711)

Petrus Schenk was een bekende Nederlandse uitgever en cartograaf. Hij werd geboren in Elberfeld in Duitsland in het jaar 1660. Vanaf 1695 begon hij te werken op het gebied van cartografie. Het allereerste cartografische werk van Schenk waren een paar kaarten die rond het jaar 1696 in de Atlas Contractus of Atlas Minor werden gepubliceerd. De uitgeverij van Petrus Schenk en Gerard Valk nam aan het eind van de zeventiende eeuw de uitgeverij over van Janssonius en kocht ook een groot aantal koperplaten van de weduwe van Nicolaes Visscher II. In 1702 publiceerde Schenk de Atlantis sylloge compendiosa. In datzelfde jaar publiceerde hij een reeks van 100 prachtige stadsgezichten in een bundel getiteld Hecatampolis.

De tweede editie van de goed verspreide Andreas Cellarius’ Celestial Atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica wordt beschouwd als de beste gezamenlijke uitgave van Gerard Valck en Petrus Schenk. Deze uitgave verscheen in het jaar 1708.

Petrus Schenk was a renowned Dutch publisher and cartographer. He was born at Elberfeld in Germany in the year of 1660. He started working in the field of cartography from 1695. The very first cartographic work of Schenck was a couple of maps that were published in Atlas Contractus or Atlas Minor around the year of 1696. The publishing house of Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk took over the publishing house from Janssonius at the end of the seventeenth century and also bought a large number of copper plates from the widow of Nicolaes Visscher II. Schenck also has to his credit another atlas called Atlantis sylloge compendiosa, which was published around the year 1702. In the same year he published a series of 100 beautiful cityscapes in a collection entitled Hecatampolis.

The second edition of the well distributed Andreas Cellarius’s Celestial Atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica is considered to be the best joint publication of Gerard Valck and Petrus Schenk. This edition was published in the year 1708.
