Backgrounds

Jodocus Hondius / Henricus Hondius / Johannes Janssonius

Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was a Flemish Carhographer who settled in Amsterdam in 1693. He founded his publishing house in the Kalverstraat ‘Inde Wackeren Hondt’. Around 1604, partly on the advice of Petrus Bertius, he bought the plates from Mercator’s estate. Supplemented with 36 new maps, a reissue of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas was released in 1606. The Atlas minor was a scaled-down edition. Later his son Henricus and his son-in-law Johannes Janssonius continued the publishing house.

Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) was one of the most important Dutch cartographers. He was also a prominent publisher in Amsterdam. The name Henricus appears for the first time on the title page of the fifth edition of the Mercator Hondius atlas from 1623.  The atlases were a great success, partly because the latest discoveries by Dutch, Spanish and English navigators were incorporated into the maps. Much attention was also paid to embellishing the maps by using cartouches, medallions with cityscapes or portraits and coats of arms.

Johannes Janssonius (1588 – 1664) was a famous Dutch cartographer, printer and publisher. In 1612 he married Elisabeth Hondius, daughter of Jodocus Hondius. Under the leadership of Janssonius the publishing house was expanded into one of the largest of that time with branches in Berlin, Frankfurt, Geneva, Lyon and Stockholm, among others. Under Janssonius’ leadership, the Mercator-Hondius Atlas was expanded and published as Atlas Novus (1636-1658). Initially consisting of one volume, this edition soon became an atlas consisting of several volumes, supplemented on request with nautical and/or sky charts. At the end of the seventeenth century, the publishing house of Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk took over the publishing house from Nicolaes Visscher II and also bought a large number of copper plates from the Janssonius publishing house.
